Learn about the science of business with the KZN ScienCentre’s Entrepreneur Day

As part of its jam-packed Youth Month programme, the KZN ScienCentre at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping will tomorrow (27 June 2012) be hosting its first Entrepreneur Day, an unconventional career programme that will explore the science of business and entrepreneurship and foster a culture of business education for children aged 8-16.

KZN ScienCentre Education Manager Nazley Kast said that “even very young children have the capacity to think entrepreneurially, and we aim to help each Entrepreneur Day participant develop leadership skills and an aptitude for business that they can put to use in the working world. By opening children’s minds to the many possibilities the business world has to offer, we aim to nurture South Africa’s next generation of self-made millionaires!”

The Entrepreneur Day programme includes informative presentations by successful young business owners from different industries, a look at some inspiring case studies, as well as a workshop on the science of entrepreneurship that will teach participants how to prepare proposals and write business plans. Participants will then be placed in groups and together with their team mates will come up with an innovative business idea and using the skills they would have just attained they will write a business plan and present it to KZN ScienCentre General Manager Candice Potgieter (SA’s youngest science centre GM), with each member of the winning group receiving double comps to the ScienCentre. Each participant will also receive an Entrepreneur certificate, and to add an extra element of fun on the day, participants are encouraged to dress up for the job they want.

Kast said that “having the skills to take a good idea and turn it into a profitable business opportunity is what being an entrepreneur is all about, and we hope to instill in Entrepreneur Day participants both the ability and confidence to do so”.

Entrance fee for the event is R50 per person, to book your place or for more information call 031 566 8040.

The Reduce, Re-use, Recycle school holidays programme (23 June – 15 July) is another of the KZN ScienCentre’s Youth Month initiatives, and this series of workshops will enlighten scholars of all ages about sustainable living and encourage them to live the 3 R’s (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle). The environmentally charged programme includes a number of fun and interactive workshops aimed at making visitors more aware of the extensive uses of everyday materials, teaching visitors about the state of our planet, and reinforcing the fact that everyone can play a huge role in making the planet a healthier and greener place for future generations.
