KZN ScienCentre to host exciting Dinner in the Dark evening

The KZN ScienCentre at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping will be hosting the first ever Dinner in the Dark evening for adults next week on Thursday 15 December. Here, blindfolded diners will enjoy a three course gourmet meal, with the taste extravaganza exploring their five senses through a true sensory eating experience. The event will tie in with the KZN ScienCentre’s month-long (10 December 2011 – 10 January 2012) ‘Science Makes Sense’ December holiday programme which will be helping children explore the five senses with a multitude of fun, interactive and educational daily activities.

The idea behind the Dinner in the Dark evening is that by eating without sight, all the other senses are heightened, bringing the different tastes, textures and smells to the forefront. Diners will be blindfolded and served a variety of high quality food, with an emphasis on using basic, distinctive and enjoyable flavours. As if the taste buds needed anymore encouragement, a glass of wine will also be served on arrival.

The Dinner in the Dark event is targeted at adults, although there will also be a children’s programme running concurrently on the evening, offering a host of activities to keep the little ones occupied. These will include interactive activities, science shows as well as a movie screening with popcorn and a range of treats. All children will also be given a snack activity box to take away with them.
According to Candice Potgieter, General Manager of the KZN ScienCentre, “this is the first time that we are hosting the Dinner in the Dark event, and we are very excited about the potential that it holds, and hopefully this will be the first of many such evenings. By attracting adults and parents to our top class facilities, it will give them a chance to have a look around and hopefully we will be able to show them that our facilities, exhibits, activities and holiday programmes will be most beneficial to their children”.

The cost of the dinner in the Dark evening is R225 per adult, inclusive of one child, each additional child is R30. For adults who will not be bringing children, the evening will cost R200 each. As a registered non-profit organization, all funds received by the KZN ScienCentre directly support its educational programmes and exhibits.
