KZN ScienCentre welcomes global leader, Sunil Geness to its ranks

In the interests of furthering its ambitions to become one of the provinces and country’s leading Non-Profit Organizations (NPO), the KZN ScienCentre recently appointed Sunil Geness as Chairman of the KZN Science Education Board – The KZN ScienCentre on 16 January 2011. Geness, who has vast experience in corporate and public organizations, will be in an advisory role to the KZN ScienCentre, looking to maximize and maintain the popularity and efficacy enjoyed by the fast-growing educational facility.

Candice Potgieter, General Manager at the KZN ScienCentre, said “having an excellent insight in the corporate world, as well as serving on many other boards, Mr. Geness will come with many years of valuable experience and will definitely be influential in accomplishing and augmenting the vision that we have as a leading educational NPO. We are very thankful and appreciative of the energy and outlook that Sunil will be bringing to our organization”.

Geness’ expertise covers many components including governance, business development, marketing, communication, government relations and donor activities amongst others within the context of Government, Quasi-Government and Private sector organizations. Having begun his professional career as a science and electronics teacher, Geness has long had a passion for science, technology and innovation. Geness has amassed an impressive array of academic achievements (which include a Bachelor of Commerce (UNISA), Bachelor of Commerce Honours Cum Laude (UNISA), Master of Management in Public and Development Management (Witwatersrand) and HED (Springfield College) as well as several scholarships at leading institutions such as Harvard and Birmingham business schools, before moving on to roles that have included a policy making and implementation stint at the South African National Government, a political advisory role at the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), and his current global role at SAP- the German software giant, to name but a few. His work in the advancement of science, technology innovation and sustainability has been extensive and on a global scale, with the latter having being recently demonstrated and acknowledged during his role in the local organising committee of the most successful World Science Centres Congress, held in Cape Town in 2011.

The KZN ScienCentre will no doubt be hoping to harness Geness’ immense potential, with Potgieter saying that this allows for more specialized advice in terms of fulfilling the goals of The KZN ScienCentre as a leading NPO.
